We have major airspace problems in Austria.
The ministery of transport (BMVIT) wants to introduce zones which cover big parts of our country, where every aircraft, including HG and PG has to carry a transponder, (Transponder mandatory zones), starting at 5.500 ft.
Even though no country around us has similar plans in the moment, there’s a big danger, that other ones will follow.
The AustroControl wants to fulfill a dubious EU-directive which, how they say, is so complicated, that only a lawyer is able to understand the juristically codified text.
The Austrian roofing bond of HG and PG pilots, the Austrian Aeroclub, is caught in a dilemma: It also represents the Austrian motor- and IFR-pilots.
We therefore have founded our own platform which tries to prevent the nonsense of a transponder-bondage for hanggliders and paragliders.

A few weeks ago we have started an international online-petition to Mrs Bures, the Austrian minister of transport not to introduce transponder-bondage for Hanggliders and Paragliders.

We ask you to link it to your website and to send it to your clubs to do the same. Of course we will support similar petitions in your country.

Evo i mail o problemima od g. Petra Brandlehnerja, austrijskog zastupnika u European Handgliding and Paragliding Union (EHPU):


As you can see, Austrian HG/PG pilots have more than one problem. First good news: 10 days ago we solved the problem with flying over our "Nationalpark Hohe Tauern" and there will be no new restrictions in the amended law..
Our second problem are the restrictions for foreign pilots and I like to thank you all for your help and the letters to our Austrian Minister of Transport. I hope, this problem will be solved soon.

And now to the third problem. I`m thinking, this is not only an Austrian problem. The directions are coming from the EASA that the countries of the EU have to adjust their airspace and and one part is to install "Transponder Mandatory Zones (TMZ)".
This week at the EASA Meeting in Köln, Germany, our airspace experts are fighting for an exemption for unmotorised HG/PG and gliders like in Germany. On the other hand our experts negotiate with the Austrocontrol on the lower limits for TMZ and their last proposal is about 11.500 ft. At the moment we have 12.500 ft so the difference is not so seriously.
